Clinical Experience
While I was doing my postgraduate studies in Scotland-UK, I have worked as Medical Register in a busy general district hospital with 1 in 2 on –call rota in General Medicine for three years. I was covering Emergency Department as well as coronary care unit.
In 1984 I joined a training course in Chest medicine at Brompton and London chest hospital which included training in bronchoscopy and pulmonary function tests. After completion of the training I was awarded a Diploma in Respiratory Medicine from Cardiothoracic Institute-London University.
On returning to Iraq in 1985, I was appointed as Consultant physician and responsible for 20 beds General Medicine unit. I was covering an Outpatient Consultation clinic one day per week, doing fiberoptic bronchoscope two days per week and reporting pulmonary function test of the hospital.
I am responsible for bronchoscopy and pulmonary function units of Rizgary Teaching Hospital.
My main practice now involves general and cardiothoracic medicine.
Teaching Experience
Since 1985 I worked as consultant physician and senior lecture in Medicine at Rizgary Teaching Hospital and Salahaddin College of Medicine – Department of medicine. My duties involve theoretical lectures twice per week and clinical bedside teaching for medical students. I participate in assessment and final M.B.Ch.B. examination of the students.
In 1991, I was appointed as Head of Department of Medicine of the College. My duties included monitoring completion of curricula, organizing clinical meetings, tutorials and journal clubs for undergraduate, postgraduate students and junior medical staff.
I supervised training and research programs of postgraduate student leading to High Diploma degree in General Medicine and four Master students in Community Medicine. I also supervised two PhD students in physiology.
As a member of higher Education and Scientific Research Council, I was responsible for planning policy of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in Iraqi-Kurdistan.
I played the main role to establish Dentistry College in 1995 and Nursing College in 2001 both in Erbil.I was appointed as Acting Dean of both colleges for one academic year until most of their problems as newly established colleges were solved .
In 2004.Iappointed as supervisor for Iraq and Arab of Medical Specialties in General Medicine until 2009
In 2016,I was appointed as Head of Respiratory Training Center, Kurdistan Board for Medical Specialties, Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq.
Administrative Experience
I was the Head of Department of Medicine with all its responsibilities from 1990 – 1993.
Dean of Salahaddin College of Medicine – Erbil - 2/12/1993-1/6/2004, after being elected by the teaching staff of the college.
After second Gulf war and UN Sanction on Iraq and Kurdistan Region many difficulties challenged the college.
I worked hard to find financial support, filling the shortages in the teaching staff and to establish postgraduate studies in some branches of medicine.
I was successful to gain the recognition for primary MB.Ch.B. qualification of the college by British GMC in December 1994.
I tried my best to improve the standards of graduates, implementation of the prescribed curricula of the college, expanding postgraduate studies and provision of facilities for research programs.
I worked hard to persuade the Council of Higher and Research to establish College of Dentistry in 1995 and College of Nursing in 2002.I was appointed as acting Dean for both colleges for one year until the curricula and needs of both colleges were fixed.
I worked in different committees in the college and the university as following:
- Head of scientific committee of the college (1987-1991).
- Head of academic promotion committee of the college (1988-1992).
- Member of the central committee of publication and translation of the university (1991-1994 and then 1998-2001).
